Dr. Arthavan Selvanathan
Arthavan had his initial training in miruthangam under the guidance of Shri Agaramangudi Anandakrishnan (Madhu) Kailash in Brisbane and continues intensive training under (the Late) Shri Srirangarajapuram Jayaraman, Shri Srirangarajapuram Ganesh and Shri K R Ganesh in Chennai, India. He completed his miruthangam arangetram in 2007. Since then Arthavan has accompanied several leading Carnatic musicians in Brisbane and Chennai, including Sikkil Gurucharan, Maharajapuram Ramachandran, the Carnatica brothers and Amrutha Murali. He has been teaching miruthangam in Brisbane for the past 15 years, now under the not-for-profit organization SRJ Rhythm Academy, with the aim of creating a generation of capable local miruthangam players in Brisbane. He performs annually at the December Music Festival season in prestigious Sabhas such as Narada Ghana Sabha, Krishna Gana Sabha and Bharat Kalachar. He works as a doctor dual training in paediatric metabolic medicine and biochemical genetic pathology.
Dr. Balaram Ramagiri
Dr Balaram Ramagiri began playing khol from the age of eight, which later inspired him to learn mridangam. He has been training under Sri Arthavan Selvanathan since the age of 12, and with Sri Srirangarajapuram J. Ganesan in Chennai since the age of 17. He completed his Arangetram in 2019, accompanying the esteemed Sri Maharajapuram Ramachandran on vocal and Sri Hosahali Raghuram on violin. Balaram has also been involved as a percussionist with the Queensland Youth Orchestra. In addition to the above, Balaram utilises his skillset in business management and event organisation to promote Carnatic Music through SRJ Rhythm Academy.
